Reel life

by Alys Metcalf

Folio Theatre Company in association with St James Theatre and Trowbridge Town Hall

One location.

Three strangers at a turning point…

And a fishing rod.

Set at a secluded bank of the River Avon, REEL LIFE explores the delicate line between fact and fiction – and what happens to the course of our lives when that line is crossed.

Developed by Folio in association with St James Theatre London, Trowbridge Town Hall and partner charity CoppaFeel, this is the world premiere of a stirring new play by Alys Metcalf.

Watch film adaptation
“Metcalf is clearly a talent to watch”
The Stage
“Reel Life incorporates subjects of love, loss and loneliness...packing an emotional punch. The play shows us the importance of being, here in the present moment...no matter if we live above or below the surface”
Everything Theatre (****) for 2016 stage premiere
“The play shows us the importance of being, here in the present moment, and it is these moments which define ourselves as living entities, no matter if we live above or below the surface”
“hinting at the exceptional” “fresh…novel…a key into someone else’s world”
Stage Talk Magazine
three separate elements and their relationship with the other takes the audience on a journey of frustration to realisation to humour and finally to sadness, no mean feat for a one act play. Reel Life is the perfect example of why theatre goers need to get out and see and support new writing and why theatres such as St James should be applauded for initiatives such as RE:Act.
Musical theatre musings
A pensive reflection from both sides of the water’s edge on life and who we meet along the way, without forgetting life's humour. Striking and original, innovative characterisation and interwoven plot
“Metcalf shows great promise as a playwright, writing about things that matter while possesing a unique voice and vision”
